Preowned 2022, excellent

John Palir has been building vintage-inspired guitars out of Southern Louisiana since 2013, and his work has quietly earned a loyal following among players who value comfort, tone, and individuality. The swamp ash body gives this offset real character, and the Lollar Jaguar pickups are an inspired choice.

CRAIG'S POV

I've always had a soft spot for Jaguar-style offset guitars in a jazz context, ever since I saw footage of Joe Pass at Synanon ripping through chorus after chorus of bebop lines on a borrowed Fender Jaguar. If Joe Pass could make that guitar sing, there's clearly something special about these short-scale offsets that goes well beyond surf rock.

John Palir has been building vintage-inspired guitars out of Southern Louisiana since 2013, and his work has quietly earned a loyal following among players who value comfort, tone, and individuality. This Phoenix in aged sunburst caught my attention the moment I picked it up.

The swamp ash body gives this offset real character, and the Lollar Jaguar pickups are an inspired choice. They nail that classic short-scale offset voice with all its jangly, slightly nasal charm, but with enough clarity and definition to keep things musical whether you're playing clean or pushing an amp.

The aged sunburst finish is beautifully done. Warm amber tones fade into darker edges in a way that feels genuinely lived-in rather than artificially distressed. Throw in the tortoise pickguard and chrome hardware, and the whole package just looks right.

Now, the neck. The C-shaped maple neck with its satin finish has that broken-in, ready-to-go feel right out of the case. This profile really impressed me. The carve, the satin feel, the way it sits in your hand. It's one I'm making a note of for future build conversations with other builders. The 10" radius rosewood fingerboard and 24" scale keep things comfortable and familiar, and the clay dot inlays keep the aesthetic honest and clean.

The Mastery bridge and tremolo system is where this Phoenix really earns its keep. Rock-solid tuning stability, smooth tremolo action, and none of the buzzing or rattling that plagues lesser offset setups. Between the Lollars, the full switching layout with its rhythm circuit, and the resonance of that swamp ash body, this Phoenix covers a lot of ground without ever losing its identity. A very cool guitar from a builder worth knowing.
