CRAIG'S POV

Catarina is another beauty from Lance at LsL! This guitar is lightly aged, with a beautiful butterscotch finish. I know I’m sounding like a stuck record (for those of us old enough to remember vinyl discs), but LsL is making some of the very finest bolt on neck guitars out there, with a strong commitment to the history and tradition of such guitars. He makes guitars, as he says, “the way they were made in the '50s.” That is: By hand from raw wood, very light nitro finishes, hand made and finished Bakelite® pick guards and hand wound pick ups. Lance and his crew of six carefully chosen guitar makers craft about two guitars a day working full steam.

This guitar is a marvel in that it has a total vintage T vibe, but way beyond a NOS (new-old-stock) guitar. It’s like like a guitar that was played and gigged and loved until it feels like butter in your hands.

LsL necks are fast and smooth, and somehow you feel like you are playing something with a history, even though it is you making the history with every note. The T-Bone has a perfectly profiled, period correct soft “V” shape, with slight shades of flame in the neck maple. But this guitar is more than a real beauty. It’s a fantastic playing instrument as well. If you are a T-style player, come in and have a seat. You’ll feel right at home.

The pickups are hand wound and tuned in house, and have a rich, full tone that is very responsive to the tone control. This means that you can go from a warm full sound in the neck pickup that Ed Bickert would love, to the tele twang Danny Gatton would make his own. Guitars made from raw wood with hand wound pickups are just better guitars because it gives the maker a chance to match the best qualities of materials every step of the way. Factory made guitars really only give one chance for that, and that’s at the end of the process, when the guitar is set up and someone has to make the best of the what’s already been assembled. Just imagine being able to make the right decisions every step of the way - from start to finish! When you get an LsL guitar, you are getting Lance Lerman’s commitment, fervor - even obsession, to make amazing traditional style guitars. And I don’t think you will find a better traditional T-style guitar out there.

ABOUT LsL GUITARS
The LSL Guitars motto is, "Never sell a guitar you don't want to keep." It all started when Lance Lerman experienced an eBay scam where he paid for a '73 Tele that never arrived. At that stage in his career Lance had had at least two stints as a builder/repairman of instruments and had generated 25 years of professional woodworking experience, running multiple large woodworking companies in the US and China. In response to his eBay experience Lance took it upon himself to build a Tele from scratch. With some dread he brought it to the amazing guitar guru, Tommy Kay, handed it over and let him play it. Tommy said, "YOU made this?" "Yeah, I made it" was the reply. Tommy: "You made the body?" And again the answer was "Yes." "You made the neck?" "Yes, I made the whole thing, all of it, except the metal parts, from lumber - planks of wood." Tommy's answer: "I'm blown away!, I'm totally blown away!" Then the question that started a guitar company: "Can you make more of these?" From that point forward, Lance started turning out guitars which kept selling immediately - sometimes within hours. This continued until it became apparent that this was the job Lance was really looking for. A job he felt passionate about, loved doing and quite possibly was one of the few things one could still make in the US successfully. So LSL Instruments was born, and they are finding success with the delivery of every instrument.
