One of the rarest '50s Strats out there is a 1957 Desert Sand with a gold anodized pickguard and a solid rosewood neck.  It’s so unique, that it’s on page 47 of “Norm’s Rare Guitar Book” so we approached Lance at LSL Guitars to see if he’d make one. He knocked it out of the park.  It’s just superb - better than anything to come out of Fender’s Custom Shop, and is right up there with most Masterbuilts. How Lance manages to do this for the price is simply astonishing.

CRAIG'S POV

One of the rarest '50s Strats out there is a 1957 Desert Sand with a gold anodized pickguard and a solid rosewood neck.  It’s so unique, that it’s on page 47 of “Norm’s Rare Guitar Book.”

It’s an esthetic I’ve always loved, but other than a few Fender Masterbuilt versions, it’s always been an elusive combination to find.

Since it’s always fascinated me, and since they’re virtually impossible to find, I approached Lance at LSL Guitars to see if he’d make me one.  He agreed, and was excited about the idea, but needed to source just the right piece of rosewood for the neck. After all, that was the element that made the instrument so unique.

It took a year, but he did.

It was worth the wait.

Lance knocked this one out of the park.  It’s just superb - I think it’s better than anything to come out of Fender’s Custom Shop, and is right up there with most Masterbuilts. How Lance manages to do this for the price is simply astonishing.

Tonally, it’s everything you expect from a great Strat, with the addition of a woody throatiness that comes from that great rosewood neck. Just a great sound. The hand wound LSL pickups are very sensitive, and it’s easy to get your tone exactly where you want it, whether playing solo or with a band. This is also a great guitar for harmonically complex music.

The neck is just splendid. The feel is outstanding. I love its very soft V profile (.88" @1st fret to .98" at the  12th fret). The 9.5" fingerboard radius and 6105 frets. The rosewood is beautifully oiled with a smooth satin feel. All of these elements add up to something wonderful and inspiring.

The finish is aged nitrocellulose lacquer, with minimal aging.

The Desert Sand color is really vintage correct and the patina is warmed to perfection ..... it's the real deal.

Lance is building some of the nicest guitars around, and he really outdid himself on this one.

Plus, CR Guitars is the only place you can get it.

If you'd like to find out more about this item, just call or e-mail me. It would be my pleasure to talk to you about it.

ABOUT LsL GUITARS
The LSL Guitars motto is, "Never sell a guitar you don't want to keep." It all started when Lance Lerman experienced an eBay scam where he paid for a '73 Tele that never arrived. At that stage in his career Lance had had at least two stints as a builder/repairman of instruments and had generated 25 years of professional woodworking experience, running multiple large woodworking companies in the US and China. In response to his eBay experience Lance took it upon himself to build a Tele from scratch. With some dread he brought it to the amazing guitar guru, Tommy Kay, handed it over and let him play it. Tommy said, "YOU made this?" "Yeah, I made it" was the reply. Tommy: "You made the body?" And again the answer was "Yes." "You made the neck?" "Yes, I made the whole thing, all of it, except the metal parts, from lumber - planks of wood." Tommy's answer: "I'm blown away!, I'm totally blown away!" Then the question that started a guitar company: "Can you make more of these?" From that point forward, Lance started turning out guitars which kept selling immediately - sometimes within hours. This continued until it became apparent that this was the job Lance was really looking for. A job he felt passionate about, loved doing and quite possibly was one of the few things one could still make in the US successfully. So LSL Instruments was born, and they are finding success with the delivery of every instrument.
