Preowned 2017, excellent

What impresses most about this particular instrument is how well-balanced it feels. The two-piece alder body resonates beautifully, while the maple-on-maple neck construction adds just the right amount of snap and clarity. JW's '50s Soft V Vintage Shape neck profile is exceptional – it fills your hand perfectly without ever feeling bulky.

CONDITION:
This JWB-S has returned to the shop from a carefully curated collection, and I'm thrilled to have it back – especially as this is number 1 of the six guitars JW built exclusively for CR Guitars in 2017. The guitar remains in excellent condition overall, showing only minimal signs of playing time. The soft aged 2-tone sunburst finish has developed that perfect lived-in patina that makes these instruments so appealing. There are a few dings and dents scattered across the body – whether from gentle use over the years or part of JW's aging process, they add to the guitar's authentic vintage character. You'll also find some light pick scratches near the pickups, all consistent with an instrument that's been enjoyed but well cared for. The frets show virtually no wear, and all hardware remains in excellent shape. For a complete assessment of the instrument's condition, please review the detailed photos provided, which offer a thorough visual representation of this exceptional guitar.

CRAIG'S POV

A little back story: I've known JW Black since the 1980s when he began his journey with the legendary Roger Sadowsky. From the very start, it was clear that JW possessed an extraordinary guitar-making gift. His talent and dedication led him to become one of the founding master builders of the revered Fender Custom Shop, solidifying his reputation as a true artisan in the guitar world. When I opened CR Guitars, I always held onto the hope of one day featuring JW Black's creations in our collection. That dream finally came to fruition in 2017 when JW crafted six exceptional guitars exclusively for CR Guitars, complete with dedicated neck plates that mark them as part of this special collaboration.

Having the first of these six guitars back in the shop feels particularly meaningful. This JWB-S represents JW's take on the classic S-style guitar, and it embodies everything I've come to expect from his work over the decades. The soft aged 2-tone sunburst finish has that lived-in quality that makes you want to pick it up and play immediately. JW understands the soul of these instruments in a way that few builders do – it's no surprise that legends like Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton have trusted him to craft their guitars.

What strikes me most about this particular instrument is how well-balanced it feels. The two-piece alder body resonates beautifully, while the maple-on-maple neck construction adds just the right amount of snap and clarity. JW's '50s Soft V Vintage Shape neck profile is exceptional – it fills your hand perfectly without ever feeling bulky. The compound 9½" radius fingerboard makes bending notes effortless up high while maintaining comfortable chord work down low.

The JWB-JC-#1 pickups are wound specifically for this guitar, and they deliver exactly what you'd hope for: warm, musical tones with plenty of character and responsiveness. Through the 5-way Grigsby switch, you have access to a full palette of classic sounds, from glassy bridge tones to creamy neck pickup warmth. The Orange Drop capacitors and thoughtful wiring ensure every position is musical and usable.

At 1.670" nut width with Jescar frets, the playability is outstanding. JW's fretwork is impeccable, as you'd expect from someone with his experience. The Gotoh Custom bridge and staggered vintage tuners keep everything stable and true. Even small details like the aged pickup covers and knobs show the care that went into creating an instrument that feels authentic without being a slavish copy.

This JWB-S comes in its original G&G Black case and represents a rare opportunity to own not just one of the six guitars JW built exclusively for CR Guitars, but the very first of that special series. It's a player's instrument through and through – one that rewards you every time you plug it in.
