CR Guitars is an authorized dealer for Collings Guitars

Great collaborations and great relationships are built on thoughtful conversation. Julian Lage and Collings guitars must have had profound and inspiring conversations to bring forth one of the finest new guitars we have played in recent years. The Collings 470 JL has finally arrived in all its antiqued blonde glory, the result of years-long conversations, engineering, testing, tweaking, playing, and listening.

The success of the Collings OM1 JL combined with Julian Lage's love of electric guitars meant a second Collings-Julian collaboration was inevitable. But following such a highly praised signature model with yet another meant leaving nothing on the table. From its organic beginnings, the process envisioned by both parties was something designed and built from the sound up.

The Collings 470 JL is the result of years-long conversations, engineering, testing, tweaking, playing, and listening. And then doing it all over again until it was right. From first sketches through plugging in the final prototypes, every aspect of this model inside and out is the result of a unique approach, technique, and style - both from the builder's and player's point of view - culminating in a one-of-a-kind electric guitar experience.

In collaboration with Julian Lage, Collings proudly presents the Collings 470 JL.

CRAIG'S POV

Great collaborations and great relationships are built on thoughtful conversation. Julian Lage and Collings guitars must have had profound and inspiring conversations to bring forth one of the finest new guitars I have played in recent years.

The Collings 470 JL has finally arrived in all its antiqued blonde glory, the result of years-long conversations, engineering, testing, tweaking, playing, and listening. Julian and Collings continually prototyped their model over and over until everything was just right. And the Collings 470 JL is just right; everything on this guitar is as it should be.

Mies van der Rohe once said, "God is in the details." And there are quite a few exciting elements on this guitar that bring out its unique excellence.

Julian wanted a guitar that combined hollow body resonance with the feedback resistance of a solid body. The result is a fully hollow trestle block body design that utilizes a solid mahogany body and maple laminate top. Collings teamed up with master pickup maker Ron Ellis to design a true single coil vintage-sounding pickup with power and clarity. The custom neck shape was carved to Julian's exacting specifications. (Those who know me know how particular I am with neck shapes, and this seductive profile is a total winner.)

Lately, I've become a fan of adding a Bigsby to specific electric guitar platforms. I'm happy to see one here on the 470JL. It adds a looser string feel while adding a bit of transience to the notes. These details and more come together to make an exceptionally buoyant, clear, detailed, and throaty-sounding guitar. A big thumbs up to Collings and Julian for bringing this exceptional and righteous guitar to us guitar players.

If you'd like to find out more about this item, just call or e-mail me. It would be my pleasure to talk to you about it.

ABOUT COLLINGS GUITARS
Bill Collings moved from Ohio to Texas in the mid 1970’s. Spurred by a lack of interest in medical school, this move enabled him to combine lifelong interests in both guitars and tools into the challenge of stringed instrument building and repair. After a couple of years in Houston, several guitars and a few banjos later, he headed west to southern California. Making it only as far as Austin, where he shared shops with fellow luthiers Tom Ellis and Mike Stevens. From there, he set up his own small shop in a wooden "one car" garage. His reputation for outstanding quality and meticulous attention to detail quickly spread. In 1989, he rented a 1000 square foot space and hired two helpers. Fast forward to present day where Collings craftsmanship is respected by professional and amateur musicians alike…anyone on the quest for quality. Some of these include artists; Keith Richards, Lyle Lovett, Pete Townshend, Emmylou Harris, Andy Summers, David Crosby, Chris Hillman, Joni Mitchell, Don Felder, John Sebastian, Lou Reed, John Fogerty, Tim O'Brien, Pete Huttlinger, Kenny Smith, Brian May, Joan Baez, John Prine, Nigel Tufnel of Spinal Tap, and Steven Spielberg to name a few. You owe it to yourself to try one.
