The whole idea for the Phaeton was to build a unique hollow body jazz guitar that could handle high volume feedback in a more compact rounded ergonomic body with solid body style sustain. Originally conceived as a project for a very discerning customer, who gave John and Serge cart blanche in building his personal dream guitar, the Phaeton has become the pinnacle of Tao guitar models. For the player/collector who is looking for a uniquely designed instrument, the Phaeton offers, along with stellar craftmanship, remarkable tone.

Comments by John and Serge of Tao Guitars:
This particular Phaeton is more on the jazz/archtop side, kind of Orville meets D'aquisto into 'Raymond Loewy streamline style.' It was specially made for the 2018 European guitar show. It's quite unique compared to our previous Phaetons. We decided to name it "Villa d'Este" because it kind of bears the aesthetics of the Alfa Romeo from 1949 6 C 2500.

Apart from being an aesthetically striking piece, it's also a real player, a smooth operating jazz guitar wearing our brand new Ribbon pickup with a clear and articulate sound and a 3 position switch that gives you more sounds options than the standard jazz neck pickup.

CRAIG'S POV

The whole idea for the Phaeton was to build a unique hollow body jazz guitar that could handle high volume feedback in a more compact rounded ergonomic body with solid body style sustain. Originally conceived as a project for a very discerning customer, who gave John and Serge cart blanche in building his personal dream guitar, the Phaeton has become the pinnacle of Tao guitar models. For the player/collector who is looking for a uniquely designed instrument, the Phaeton offers, along with stellar craftmanship, remarkable tone. Benedetti (not Benedetto), the renowned French pickup designer, created a singular ribbon pickup that is amazingly articulate and versatile - it's just wonderful! It is wired in such a away that the 3 position switch adds different sonic colors to the single custom ribbon pickup. It actually reminds of how the legendary Taku Sakashta wired my single humbucker Spotlight model. With the flip of the switch you can go from very sweet and warm jazz tones to the unique '60s vintage tone of the classic Wandre guitars.

Obviously, this isn't your father's jazz guitar — there are already plenty of those fine beasts in the market place. The Tao Phaeton Villa d'Este's creative and skillful design pairs form and function together masterfully while underlining the talents of Belgium builders John and Serge. Well done guys!

ABOUT TAO GUITARS
Tao Guitars' hot rod inspired creations represent a crucial contribution to the modern guitar building art form. First & foremost, all Tao Guitars instruments are fully hand made from wood cutting & shaving to finishes, sanding & polishing, everything is done the old way using rasps, scrappers, chisels & sweat which make each piece unique due to the somewhat random aspect of the real by-hand work. Tao Guitars approaches every project as unique. That's why they don't make guitars in series or batches. Every instrument has its own character, its own body contour or neck shape, custom color & hardware. The sum of all these little details is instruments that sound clear, articulate, harmonically rich, heavenly sustaining, with a big bold jaw dropping tone DNA. Tao Guitars only builds one-off masterpieces!
