Developed with input from Pat Metheny

It's no wonder Pat Metheny has of late been showing up at gigs armed with his Slaman guitars including this model, Slaman's latest, the Old School Dome Nylon electric archtop. Developed together by Pat and Daniel, the Old School Dome offers an archtop player a comfortable way to step into the nylon world without giving up the playability he is used to. As a "Custodian" guitar it was crafted with rare woods that Daniel has been collecting from around the world; an added beauty to an already sublime instrument.

The Old School Dome Custodian is a guitar featuring special woods and inlay. Over the past 40 + years Daniel Slaman has been collecting rare woods from around the world with the idea of making guitars with them, one day. Well, in the year 2019, that day has come. Some of the woods date back to the time when Daniel was building classical guitars. These woods are eminently suited to making nylon string archtop jazz guitars, specifically the Old School Dome.

The way the special guitars are distinguished is by adding the word "Custodian" to the model name as in Old School Dome Custodian,  "Custodian" in the meaning of a person or organization that is responsible for protecting, caring for, or maintaining something or someone.

The vibe of the thing being that the Custodian guitar is special and the owner is in fact the custodian of an object of value and beauty; to have the feeling of enjoying and caring for the guitar for a given time, be it long or short, and even a feeling of a time in the future (distant or near future but that time will come) that somebody else will take over that role; maybe another owner, maybe a son or daughter, maybe a dear friend. Over the years many customers feel like their Slaman guitar has become a family member that will be treasured by next generations.

The Old School Dome Custodian pays tribute to the greatest guitar maker of all, Antonio de Torres (1817 - 1892). All Custodian models will feature a Torres style herringbone inlay on the top to honour the maestro. While Daniel Slaman doesn't feel he can stand in the shadow of maestro Torres, we all need heroes and Torres is his. Inspiration springs eternal.

Torres was a master in combining woods to create an harmonious looking instrument; likewise the Custodian guitars feature carefully chosen materials for esthetic and sound reasons. Therefore the guitar can be treasured not only as wonderful musical instrument, but also as Objet d'Art.

In Daniel's guitar making career, the time has come to build these special guitars.

CRAIG'S POV

I am very fortunate to be able to be able to represent Slaman guitars. In this case, I think Daniel's words understate just how fantastic this guitar is. Not only is Daniel an extremely talented luthier of the first order who's sensitive to a professional player's needs, he's also a fine human being imbued with passion for the instrument. As a talented player himself, he deeply understands the nuances of a guitar's build and has the high and rare level of skills to translate his vision into an instrument. In short, in the view of CR Guitars, Daniel Slaman is a maestro of epic abilities, not someone to be shy in the face of his own heros!

Lately this has been Pat's go to nylon string guitar.

This is the second Old School Dome (OSD) to grace our shop and it is just outstanding. As a Custodian guitar (read above) it was crafted with rare woods that Daniel has been collecting from around the world; an added beauty to an already sublime instrument.

I have played many luthiers' attempts at building a nylon archtop and I have to say the OSD is by far the best I've had the pleasure to play. The acoustic tone is warm, percussive and rich. Ergonomically, it so comfortable and familiar due to the kind of playability is you'd expect from a fine jazz guitar. But what really knocks me out is how wonderful it sounds amplified. It's no accident. Daniel went to great lengths to get this right. Pat loves the sound of vintage '80s Ovation pickups and uses them in his Manzer acoustics. Daniel (and I, by the way) agree. They are superlative sounding and Daniel has been buying old Ovations just so he can harvest their pickups. Talk about caring and details! Once installed with the FET 3 Ovation preamp I would be hard pressed to find a more satisfying electric tone.

The sum of the design, fit and finish and sonic palette make this an awesome and inspired instrument that really blows me away. Well done Daniel!

If you'd like to find out more about this item, just call or e-mail me. It would be my pleasure to talk to you about it.

ABOUT DANIEL SLAMAN GUITARS
Daniel Slaman has been making guitars since 1978. Born in 1957, the first guitar was made with help from his father and the book ‘Classical Guitar Making’ by the late Irving Sloane. After spending much time with the classical and flamenco guitars, since 1995 Daniel has been making archtop jazz guitars exclusively. To Slaman, guitar making is an expression of creative freedom; every choice that is made for a particular guitar is made to achieve a unity in design. The result may not be to everybody's taste, that's a different matter, but the unity of design should always shine through in choices of wood, size, decoration and finish colour of the guitar. The result is always a unique one-of-a-kind instrument, made by one mind and set of hands. Slaman players connect to their guitar(s) in a unique way. To these owners, the guitar has a meaning beyond physical aspects; there's always a bond or connection between the player and the guitar. The guitars transcend the status of mere physical objects; they almost become a part of the family, an irreplaceable item of value both material and immaterial.
