According to Gary Rossington, many of Lynard Skynyrd's early classics were written on a Gibson SG/Les Paul, and to this day Gary still hauls out a lovingly battered '61 SG/Les Paul every night for the trademark slide parts on the band's classic, Freebird. The Custom Shop is now offering the Gary Rossington SG Standard - carefully aged by Tom Murphy to look just like Gary's original. Limited Edition of 250.

CRAIG'S POV

Condition: straight out of a collection and virtually unplayed, this minty all original Gary Rossington SG is available with all the factory documentation.

The Gibson SG is a very cultish guitar. People who love SGs really adore them. To me it's a Gibson made for a Strat player. In fact, it was Gibson's very first contoured solid body guitar, replacing the Les Paul as the premier Gibson solid body, and for a couple of years, was even called a Les Paul. It was originally conceived as a Fender Stratocaster challenger. For the players who bonded with the model it was manna from heaven, players like Derek Trucks, Frank Marino, Tony Iommi, Angus Young and, of course, the legendary Gary Rossington (a founding member of Lynyrd Skynyrd and Freebird fame).

Our current offering is a 2003 Gibson Gary Rossington SG Les Paul '61, an exacting replica of Gary’s famous '61 SG Les Paul aged by none other than the legendary Tom Murphy. And it is good...I mean really good. Every nuance, from its perfect neck shape to the added brilliance of its Maestro tailpiece is just right. It's so good that I needed to confirm its righteousness with my good buddy and brilliant guitarist Matte Henderson. Matte is an encyclopedia of all things guitar. You want to know about vintage classic electrics? Ask Matte. So I did. Matte played this beast for quite some time and I'll share his thoughts with you:

"This is, to me, as close as Gibson will ever get to the original issue SG Les Pauls of 1961-1963. Reasonable weight (7.6 lbs), minimal neck dive, even with Grovers. Extremely resonant.

"The SG is a brilliantly designed instrument. The fretboard accessibility is remarkable. The Burstbuckers handle everything from clean to over the top high gain seamlessly. Many of my favorite players utilized SGs to great effect at some point in their career. Players like Allan Holdsworth, Ollie Halsall, Cream era Clapton, Duane Allman, and Nicky Skopelitis all come to mind.

"This particular guitar clearly sat in a collection and is in unplayed, all-original condition. There's no fretwear, no gunk on the board. It's a virtual time capsule. Tom Murphy's aging work is meticulous and accurate. There's unfaded cherry under all its parts. There's even orange peel on the headstock sides, just like the original Gibsons.

"You won't find a better SG Les Paul. New or vintage." - Matte Henderson

So there you have it. If you are looking for a classic rock guitar without diving deep into vintage land I highly recommend this Gary Rossington SG. I'd go so far as to say this is one of the best Artist Model Gibsons ever made. Note.. check out this video of a young Clapton being interviewed with his famous SG. Can you believe the sound and his playing!: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9ODNQPQo3A
