Preowned 2010, excellent minus

With a rich, complex tone full of sweetness, this CJ is more than just one of Collings's best jumbo instruments. It's particularly alive and open, most likely because of being played night after night by the highly gifted guitarist/ composer, Adam Levy (Norah Jones, Rosanne Cash, Amos Lee, and Lisa Loeb). The combination of magic notes played on a magic guitar is hard to beat.

Condition: excellent minus. The top and back have assorted dings, dents and minor scratches, but nothing that breaks through the varnish finish. The neck is quite clean with little playing wear. The playability of this CJ is excellent with no issues.

CRAIG'S POV

I love to put my hands on guitars that have been owned by other professional musicians. They ooze mojo; seemingly by absorbing the musical DNA of their previous owners.

This recent CR Guitars discovery certainly fits that bill. And more.

Part of this CJ's magic is due to its varnish finish, which is no longer available as an option from Collings. Beyond its wonderful sonority, the playability of this beauty is excellent, just as it would have been if it had just left the Collings factory.

I have had many superb acoustics come through CR Guitars. Trust me, this CJ is truly special, one that deserves to be loved and cared for; a big thumbs up here.

And now for Adam's impressions:

"I've owned this CJ for about a year and a half. In the time I've had it, I toured as a band member with Lizz Wright and Amy Helm. The guitar seemed to be very happy there, carrying the bottom end of the sonic spectrum, rich and complex like a grand piano.

"You can't really compare an orchestra model to a dreadnought, but I would say that—like an OM—this CJ always sits in the sonic sweet spot, whether I played it alone or with a full band (using the K&K pure mini pickup system).

"If you ever get the chance to play this CJ out in the woods, you'll be amazed. I brought it to teach with at Jazz Camp West in Northern California this summer. All of my classes were outdoors, under the redwood trees. The CJ sounded huge out there!"

If you'd like to find out more about this item, just call or e-mail me. It would be my pleasure to talk to you about it.

ABOUT COLLINGS GUITARS
Bill Collings moved from Ohio to Texas in the mid 1970’s. Spurred by a lack of interest in medical school, this move enabled him to combine lifelong interests in both guitars and tools into the challenge of stringed instrument building and repair. After a couple of years in Houston, several guitars and a few banjos later, he headed west to southern California. Making it only as far as Austin, where he shared shops with fellow luthiers Tom Ellis and Mike Stevens. From there, he set up his own small shop in a wooden "one car" garage. His reputation for outstanding quality and meticulous attention to detail quickly spread. In 1989, he rented a 1000 square foot space and hired two helpers. Fast forward to present day where Collings craftsmanship is respected by professional and amateur musicians alike…anyone on the quest for quality. Some of these include artists; Keith Richards, Lyle Lovett, Pete Townshend, Emmylou Harris, Andy Summers, David Crosby, Chris Hillman, Joni Mitchell, Don Felder, John Sebastian, Lou Reed, John Fogerty, Tim O'Brien, Pete Huttlinger, Kenny Smith, Brian May, Joan Baez, John Prine, Nigel Tufnel of Spinal Tap, and Steven Spielberg to name a few. You owe it to yourself to try one.
