Preowned near mint, 2018

Our current Comins offering is an exquisite 2018 custom archtop. If a picture is worth a thousand words please feel invited to immerse yourself in these photos. The masterful craftsmanship is evident, as is Comins's artistic touches. This is a stunning and elegant guitar. The "Tulip" is reminiscent of the later work of the great Jimmy D'Aquisto. The guitar's lines, the woods, the eschewing of plastic binding and pearl inlays, all these elements hark to Jimmy's Solo and Centura models.

CRAIG'S POV

Bill Comins has an enviable reputation for building some of the finest archtop guitars in this, the current Golden Age of lutherie. I've known Bill for many years and have always had tremendous respect for his artistry and talent. As a player himself, he deeply understands that a fine guitar has to be made not just to the highest levels of craftsmanship but, most importantly, it should inspire the guitarist to make music.

The "Tulip" is what I want in a guitar. One that I dream about playing, one that demands I crack open the case and play. To me, custom guitars need to be crafted with the enlightened player in mind, to be an elegant tool that helps inspire one's musical ideas, whether sitting on a couch or plugged in on stage.

Our current Comins offering is an exquisite 2018 custom archtop. If a picture is worth a thousand words, I invite you to immerse yourself in these photos. The masterful craftsmanship is evident, as is Comins's artistic touches. This is a stunning and elegant guitar.

The "Tulip" reminds me of the later work of the great Jimmy D'Aquisto. The guitar's lines, the woods, the eschewing of plastic binding and pearl inlays, all these elements remind me of Jimmy's Solo and Centura models. The electric tone has a beautiful bloom; you can hear the sweet woody resonance within each note.

The acoustic tone is pure Comins. It is sweet and warm with an evenness and sustain that is eminently musical. Bill doesn't build his archtops to compete with flattops. They aren't big and brassy sounding with lots of swimming overtones. Instead, they are made to be jazz guitars, free of woof tones and more resistant to feedback.

As with all of Bill's archtops, the playability is superb. The elegant neck carve is a perfect match for the 1 7/8" nut width. The fit and finish are stellar. The subtle and artful inlay and engraving work done by Bill and Larry Robinson just raise this guitar to another level. I could go on and on because I see another special touch added to this guitar everywhere I look.

Bottom line, if you are looking for something extraordinary, built by one of our finest builders, this Comins Tulip should be on your radar.

ABOUT BILL COMINS GUITARS
Philadelphia, PA based luthier Bill Comins began playing guitar at an early age, eventually going on to study jazz guitar at Temple University. His initial career as a working musician and private instructor, however, would inevitably give way to a lifelong pursuit of the art of Luthiery. Over the last 20 plus years, Bill has been dedicated to refining a line of instruments with a main focus on archtop jazz guitars. Hallmarks of Comins guitars include precise setup work, comfortable feeling necks, a clear and round high end, punchy mids, and a broken in or "old wood" sound. Guided by the works of great makers past and present, Comins has devoted much attention to considering elements such as modeling and graduation of the arched plates, mass of individual components, sound-hole styling and placement, variables in geometric relationships, etc. This progression of fine-tuning has led to deep understanding of how components function in concert, and how they can be manipulated toward a desired result. Producing a limited number of pieces per year, Bill remains mindful of each instrument’s intended use, and approaches every project with reverence.
