CRAIG'S POV

We just got in a lovely pre-owned Marc Beneteau Super Jumbo that was made in 2007. Beneteau is a fantastic luthier based in Canada with a tremendous reputation for building fine acoustic guitars that have a distinctive, full-bodied and dynamic voice. He began making guitars in 1974, and has remained committed to being a one-person shop ever since, with every aspect of the building process accomplished by his hands alone. (The one exception is the signature *B* on the headstock, which a friend of his cuts, though Marc does the inlay work.)

This guitar is his Super Jumbo (SJ) model, which is the largest guitar he makes. Its a huge sounding instrument, but also not boomy at all, as large body guitars tend to be. Jumbo guitars move a lot of air, making them a significant challenge for a guitar maker, but this instrument is very well balanced, and the experience of playing it is dynamic, with sound waves swirling around and enveloping you. The port in the upper bout also really allows the player to experience the range on the instrument.

The guitar has a very nice full C neck, and despite the nearly 17 inch lower bout, is surprisingly comfortable to play. A thoughtful addition to the design that really helps the ergonomics is the arm bevel on the lower bout. Often called a *Ryan bevel* — after luther Kevin Ryan. The idea was actually developed first by fellow Canadian luther Grit Laskin. It makes any acoustic guitar more comfortable to play, and is an especially apt addition to a large bodied guitar like the SJ.

The gorgeous dark Brazilian rosewood back and sides are unexpected because it is quite uncommon to see a large bodied guitar made with such a rare wood. Of course there are different opinions among even the most accomplished luthiers about the contribution of Brazilian rosewood to the tone of a guitar, but in my experience the guitars that I have played and owned with Brazilian have a kind of sweetness to the tone. Of course it may be simply the way the particular guitars have been voiced by the builder, but this Beneteau has that sweetness, which works exceptionally well with the enormous full spectrum tone.

Beneteau is known for his consummate artistry, and this guitar, while simple in its appointments, has an elegance that is very satisfying. In addition to the beautiful back and sides, the fine grain Sitka spruce top has a wonderful patina, and the simple rosette brings the whole visual aesthetic of the guitar into equilibrium.

While playing this guitar an analogy with stereo speakers occurred to me. There are some excellent small speakers being made that have great bass response, but for power and deep bass nothing can match a pair of speakers with large speaker cones. One is not better than the other, they are just different. If you love the huge sound that only a big bodied guitar can deliver, this instrument will give you the power you want, but also nuance and subtlety, balance, and excellent playability and comfort.

If you'd like to find out more about this item, just call or e-mail me. It would be my pleasure to talk to you about it.
