Condition extremely fine - no visible playing wear

This 2014 beauty has been tucked away at the shop and other than some choice moments has had little playing time on her. The condition is as close to new as it can be without being new out of the box. The action is low and smooth and the tone is everything you’d expect from a classic Gibson archtop.

CRAIG'S POV

Personal story. I first became acquainted with the Gibson Byrdland in the '60s when my guitar teacher, Mike Warren, used to give me lessons on the one he owned. Mike, by the way, was a superb guitarist who a few years later moved to California and had an illustrious career playing and conducting for top shelf recording artists. In fact, Mike was instrumental in introducing me to the studio scene. When I visited him in the early '70s, having studied with Pat Martino, I originally was intent on pursuing a jazz guitarist’s life. That was up until the moment I hung out with Mike at a recording session. I absolutely fell in love with that world and my goal from that moment on was to learn whatever I needed to move through the studio ranks.

Back to Mike’s Byrdland. I really loved that guitar. And though it took a minute to get accustomed to the shorter scale, I found it totally inspiring and wonderfully playable. The Byrdland allows me to reach beyond my normal jazz vocabulary and capture a more soulful part of myself. The shorter scale length lets me use heavier gauge strings, and allows more expression because of the reduced string tension. The tone is fat and sweet with the flexibility to dial in your rock personality if you so desire. Personally I think everyone should have one, or in my case, several.

This offering was hand selected by me. Though I’m no longer a Gibson endorsing artist, I still have my connections and this beauty is an excellent example of what the Gibson Custom Shop is capable of building. In my opinion, the Byrdland is one of the models that Gibson has improved upon over the years. They stay in tune better and the rounder neck carve along with a wider nut and string spacing improves the playability. It really is my favorite archtop in the current Gibson catalogue.

If it weren’t for the fact that I’m eyeing a pristine 1958 Byrdland, this guitar would not be on the market.

So if one of these carved top sunburst monsters is what you’ve been looking for, I have it right here ready to find a new home.

If you'd like to find out more about this item, just call or e-mail me. It would be my pleasure to talk to you about it.
