The first Holcomb to enter the CR Guitars orbit is a new model called JUDY. A lightweight, incredibly resonant guitar, Judy is, for starters, simply a beautiful guitar. The fit and finish are top notch with the level of craftsmanship that we look for in a guitar that finds its home at our shop. Inspired by the SG, Chris takes that recipe to a new level. Built to last without the structural shortcomings of the SG, Judy is a sonic beast. The Lollar Gold Foil pickups just bloom with character, coupling a vintage flavor to a wide range musical voice.

In Chris Holcomb’s words:
"The concept behind this guitar and many of my other models is to combine the aesthetics and sound of vintage guitars with the playability of a modern guitar. I really focused in on the sound that you can only find from old Silvertone and Harmony guitars which led to the gold foil pickups. I also was looking to make a light weight guitar with easy access to the entire fingerboard, so I looked to the SG for inspiration.

"I have my own style of mortise and tenon neck joint which is much stronger than what you would find on a Gibson, but it relies on the neck angle registering off of the top rather than just the neck pocket or neck like most other solid body instruments. I machined a 25' radius into the top like an acoustic guitar. This gives me the desired 2 degree neck angle. You won't notice the radius in the top unless you are specifically looking for it, but it makes a huge difference in the playability and structural integrity of the neck joint."

CRAIG'S POV

It’s a great pleasure for me to introduce a new builder to CR Guitars. Chris Holcomb has been around for some time and has built a fine reputation for his exquisite work. Chris is one of the few builders who can build electrics, archtops, dobros and flattops. An absolute pleasure to work with, he understands the needs of the player who is looking for a bespoke instrument that is as inspiring to play as it is to own.

Built to last without the structural shortcomings of the SG, Judy is a sonic beast. The Lollar Gold Foil pickups just bloom with character, coupling a vintage flavor to a wide range musical voice. The sound is big and clear through my Blackface Princeton and really rips when I throw on my Cornish distortion pedals. This is NOT a bland, vanilla sounding guitar. I love guitars like this; guitars that have an attitude, guitars that are loaded with character and yet can find their home in any musical genre. Along with its awesome tone, the playability is outstanding. The C profile neck carve is extremely comfortable, not too big and not too small; a perfect fit for this particular guitar.

If you love guitars that are vintage inspired but are made and play as well as the finest modern bespoke guitars I think that Chris Holcomb’s Judy should be on your radar. Well done Chris!

ABOUT C.F. HOLCOMB GUITARS
Building instruments has been a romantic idea to Chris Holcomb since childhood. To this day, even after participating in the construction of hundreds of instruments, he finds his work to be inspiring and if anything, he has become more passionate about it. Over the course of ten years, Holcomb has received instruction from some of the most incredible luthiers in California, including Scott Walker, Rick Turner, Jeff Traugott, and Richard Hoover (Santa Cruz Guitar Company). Chris uses the techniques that he has learned and some that he is developing on his own to come out with a line of instruments that can be tailored to just about any musician's sound, feel, and aesthetic. Chris tries to maintain as much contact as possible with each musician as he is building their instrument to make sure every detail is well thought out and perfectly tailored.
